Before 1997

A laboratory in Pulau Pinang

Protasco's origins date back to 1952 with the establishment of Jabatan Kerja Raya's (JKR) first material laboratory in Pulau Pinang. In 1967, the laboratory became part of JKR's Research and Development Unit.

JKR's Training Centre commenced operations in 1981 and was later consolidated with four regional laboratories in 1987, leading to the formation of Institut Latihan & Penyelidikan (ILP) JKR Malaysia on 1 January 1988. ILP was subsequently rebranded as Institut Kerja Raya Malaysia (IKRAM), which was privatised to Kumpulan Ikram Sdn Bhd on 1 January 1997.

1997

IKRAM is privatised

Privatisation of IKRAM to Kumpulan Ikram Sdn Bhd (KISB), where KISB was awarded a 15 year privatisation concession of IKRAM services. Kumpulan Ikram provided engineering related Training, Research and Technical Services to its clients, with specialisation in geotechnical.

1998

Kolej IKRAM opens its doors

Kolej IKRAM, the Group's first tertiary education institution, was established to support its long-term commitment to education. Over the years, Kolej IKRAM achieved various upgrades and became known as Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University College (KLIUC).

2000

Federal roads, the length of the peninsula

Roadcare (M) Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of HCM Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd was awarded the privatisation of federal road maintenance of Peninsular Malaysia.

2003

Protasco Berhad lists on Bursa Malaysia

Protasco Berhad was listed on Bursa Malaysia following a consolidation of Paves Sdn Bhd, HCM Engineering Sdn Bhd, Protasco Trading Sdn Bhd, and Kumpulan Ikram Sdn Bhd.

2012

KLIUC becomes a full university

KLIUC attained full university status and was renamed Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL).

2019

Energy joins the group

The Energy Division became Protasco's new business addition. The division commenced billing of power generation and supply of energy to the TNB in early 2021, as per a 21-year Power Purchase agreement signed in April 2018.

2020

Into hospitality, in Putrajaya

This was followed by the Group's entry into the hospitality industry with the opening of the Park Inn by Radisson Putrajaya.

2024

Agriventure, and a stake in food security

The Group subsequently expanded into the agriventure sector, further diversifying its business portfolio and reinforcing its long-term growth strategy, and playing its part in the nation's food security.

2025

A strategic realignment

Protasco divested its education arm as part of a strategic business realignment.

What is IKRAM, and how is it connected to Protasco?

IKRAM is Institut Kerja Raya Malaysia, the public works training and research institute formed in 1988 as Institut Latihan and Penyelidikan JKR Malaysia, from JKR's training centre and four regional laboratories. It was privatised to Kumpulan Ikram Sdn Bhd on 1 January 1997 under a 15 year concession, and Kumpulan Ikram was one of the four companies consolidated into Protasco Berhad at listing.

When was Protasco Berhad listed on Bursa Malaysia?

Protasco Berhad was listed on Bursa Malaysia in 2003, following a consolidation of Paves Sdn Bhd, HCM Engineering Sdn Bhd, Protasco Trading Sdn Bhd and Kumpulan Ikram Sdn Bhd. It trades under stock code 5070.

Does Protasco still own a university?

No. Protasco divested its education arm in 2025 as part of a strategic business realignment. Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur, which the group established in 1998 as Kolej IKRAM, is no longer part of Protasco.
